  • Painting with Fervor

Lot’s of things are heating up! The temperature outside is rising and my artwork is HOT. It’s the first time in 17 years I’m looking forward to the summer. I left Phoenix, Arizona last June and resettled in Bend, Oregon. I create my mixed media artworks using encaustic, which needs heat and ventilation (open windows) for safety reasons. When I lived in Phoenix I couldn’t paint in the summer, I’m so glad that isn’t the ...

  • The Tumor is VERY Little

This painting was inspired by cancer, atomic bombs and the loss of my aunt. My aunt was born in the 1950′s when the Atomic Energy Lab was sold, a toy that included cancer-causing uranium ore. I don’t think my aunt ever played with this toy but I picked up the color palette from the toy for my artwork because the colors were bright and pure. The toy makes me think of all the things in our ...

  • Painting cracks in the Road

I just finished a new series of acrylic paintings inspired by mountain biking. Over the winter the mountain bike trails in Bend, Oregon were muddy so I rode my bike on the road. I frequently went on Skyliner Road leading up to Tumalo Falls, it was a steady climb on the way out so I had plenty of time to stare at the ground. I noticed the road was fairly new but the elements were ...

  • Geographies of Memory

Lisa Marie Sipe, “Geographies of Memory,” encaustic, photography and tree bark From the Bathed in Fire series: The destructive force that burned through areas of Arizona and New Mexico earlier this year scorched the land my husband grew up on in the White Mountains of Arizona. The Wallow fire didn’t take family photo albums or ranch structures but it changed the landscape so we can only visit scars within our lifetime. Bathed in Fire captures ...

  • The Sketchbook Project

The Sketchbook Project is the opportunity to create a sketchbook to tour across the country and ultimately end up in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Library. After hearing about the Sketchbook Project I thought it would be an interesting way to share my artistic vision and I loved the idea that my sketchbook would be part of a permanent collection in New York. So after signing up for the project online I received my ...

  • Off the Wall with Miles Conrad

The first post-conference workshop I attended at the 5th International Encaustic Conference was Off the Wall with Miles Conrad at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. This workshop covered the technical fundamentals for creating innovative three-dimensional works made of encaustic and/or incorporating mixed media and found objects. It was a seriously fun class, we started by learning how to make orbs out of found objects and dipping them in wax. A selection of objects experimented ...

  • My First Hotel Fair: How to Make a Hotel Chair Fancy

I’ve never been to a hotel fair and I had a chance to participate in one at the 5th International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, MA. To prepare for the fair I packed 4 small paintings (as much as I could fit in my carry on) and my ipad. Little did I know the ipad was Hotel Fair magic, it was my secret to making hotel chairs fancy. There was no way I could bring my ...

  • Demos at the 5th International Encaustic Conference

I attended the 5th International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown, MA from June 3-5, 2011. Throughout the conference I had the opportunity to pick the discussions and demos I wanted to attend. Looking back I can’t believe how many different sessions I participated in. I’ve put together a quick recap of what I experienced at my sessions.Fusing with a Torch Presented by Lynette Haggard I’ve wondered for a while now how you use a torch with encaustic. ...

  • 5th International Encaustic Conference

I just attended the 5th International Encaustic Conference at the Provincetown Inn in Cape Cod. I’ve never attended an art conference before so I really wasn’t sure what to expect but I found the conference provided me exactly what I needed. I learned from and was inspired by my peers. I was shown new and refined encaustic techniques and I was infused with inspiration. There were so many experiences at the conference I’m going to do several ...

  • Girl Plays in Radioactive Dirt

“It all started out with a back ache,” said my Aunt and Godmother, Linda Beketa. Earlier this year she went to the doctor for back pain and through a series of tests discovered she had lung cancer, a tumor on her kidney and brain and fractured vertebrae caused by bone cancer. Linda went through a series of treatments including heavy rounds of chemotherapy and radiation that weakened her body and did little to fight the ...
